Ovarian cancer is an illness that hits close to home at Newk’s Eatery. Lori Newcomb, the wife of Newk’s co-founder and CEO Chris Newcomb, was diagnosed with Stage IIIC ovarian cancer in early 2013. For months, the busy mother of three missed the changes in her health that were early warning signs of the disease.
The united goal for the Newk’s Cares ovarian cancer initiative is to educate women about ovarian cancer and promote research for a cure. In most cases, ovarian cancer cannot be prevented; however, early detection can greatly improve a woman’s survival rate. In honor of ovarian cancer awareness, Newk’s replaced our traditional black cup with a bright teal one during the month of September and we continue to provide our guests with educational materials regarding the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer.
By sharing her story, Lori and the Newk’s Eatery family hope it will be a source of strength, inspiration and hope in the fight against ovarian cancer.
We are proud of our Southern roots and our ties to Alabama. And as much as we love our BBQ, wetting a hook, or the gult coast sand beneath our feet, our passion is doing great work for our clients.
Whether that is crafting the perfect message, or finding the perfect moment for that message to take root, we are driven by the belief that it is much more important to show than to tell.
The CanSurvive GYN Cancer Support Group is for women with gynecologic cancers, their families, friends, loved ones and the professionals who treat them. Members of the group recognize that in addition to excellent medical care, there is a deep need for emotional, spiritual, and educational support when faced with the challenge of a life-threatening illness. www.cansurvivesupportgroup.org
